Abstract
One of the most important determinants of population growth is fertility. This fact was shown most convincingly by the American demographer Coale (1959, p. 38) by means of calculations demonstrating that over a period of time a cessation of deaths would have less influence on the population growth of the United States than would an increase of 20 per cent in fertility.
