T-cell Dependency of the Response to PVP is Dependent on Maturity of B-cells

  • Chapter
Immune Reactivity of Lymphocytes

Abstract

Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) belongs to the group of thymus independent (TI) antigens. Among those antigens are various polymeric molecules such as bacterial polysaccharides and their respective hapten derivatives (1–4, 6), poly-D-aminoacids (5) and, as mentioned, PVP (7). In contrast to the thymus dependent (TD) antigens (8) the TI ones seem capable of eliciting humoral antibody responses without the aid of helper T-cells. The response to many of the TI antigens consists exclusively of IgM, and therefore T-lymphocytes have been postulated as necessary for normal IgG responses. This concept however seems uncorrect, since PVP (9 and Tables 1, 2) and DNP-lys-Ficoll (6) elicit IgM and IgG responses, which both are TI.
