Summary
Polymyxin Sulfonic Acid (Aremyxin) was administered to 40 patients suffering from infections due to gram — organisms (24 cases of urinary infection and 16 of septicaemia). At a dose of 20,000 to 30,000 U/kg/day, cure was obtained in 31 patients, 15 of which were cases of septicaemia. In 12 cases it was used together with another antibiotic (carbenicillin or aminoside). Failures were due either to microbial resistance or to a change of organism. Renal impairment, present in 5 patients, resolved completely in all cases when treatment was discontinued. The substance may be given at lower doses to patients with renal insufficiency.
