Abstract
We have developed an apparatus for direct beam foil measurements of mean lives of x-ray emitters with lifetimes in the picosecond range. The apparatus uses a uniformly linear track which moves the exciting foil in very small steps and a Doppler-tuned spectrometer for observing radiation from the foil and the downstream beam. Sulphur beams at 50, 60 and 66 MeV were excited in passage through a nickel foil to obtain x-ray spectra from helium like sulphur. The measured lifetime for the 3P1 state in helium like sulphur is (1.57 ± 0.18) psec, in agreement with theoretical expectation.
