X-Rays from Foil-Excited Beams at Tandem Energies

  • Chapter

Abstract

Foil-excitation of heavy-ion beams in the MeV/amu range can readily produce vacancies in inner-shells whose electrons are moving at a velocity comparable to that of the beam. While most such ionic systems with inner shell vacancies decay in or very near the exciting foil, x-ray emission downstream will signal the production and decay of metastable systems. Metastability is particularly common near closed-shell configurations. Experiments to study the production and decay of metastable systems with K-shell vacancies (Z ≲ 17) and M-shell vacancies (Z = 53) will be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to efforts to measure very long lifetimes, such as those of the 23S1 state in heliumlike sulfur and chlorine, and very short ones, such as that of the 23P1 state in heliumlike sulfur.
