Abstract
The magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constant of the \( ^{\text{2}} {\text{P}}_{\frac{3} {2}}^{\rm O} \) state of Li I has attracted much theoretical investigation due to the extreme importance of correlation (the RHF result for \( {\text{A}}_{\frac{{\text{3}}} {{\text{2}}}} I/\mu \) is 2.97 MHz and the experimental result2 −1.42 MHz) and because Li is a few-electron system and thus computationally tractable. The situation differs from other well-investigated anomalies3 (e.g. contact terms in B I 2Po and N I 4So) due to the large cancellation among the various operators, in place of the heavy cancellation of α and β spin densities.
