Abstract

The natural occurrence of cyclic GMP was first reported in 1963 by Ashman et al. (2) who isolated the nucleotide from rat urine. In 1969 Goldberg et al. (32) and Ishikawa et al. (50) detected cyclic GMP in tissues from mammals and lower phyla. In the same year, three laboratories published reports of an enzyme, guanylate cyclase, that catalyzed the formation of cyclic GMP from GTP in cell-free systems (47, 50, 84, 99). Since then, a number of properties of guanylate cyclase have been extensively studied. This is a review of these properties and of some methodologic considerations based on our own work and on published literature.
