Diseases Involving Cyclic AMP

  • Georges Van den Berghe

Abstract

In view of the wide variety of physiological functions in which cAMP plays a crucial role, it is not surprising that the metabolism of the cyclic nucleotide is involved in several diseases. In this lecture, the studies of the cAMP system that have been performed in a certain number of endocrinopathies and other disorders will be reviewed. Most of the data presented will concern human pathology but occasional reference will be made to animal experiments that have provided fundamental understanding of the disease process. The eventual role of cAMP in cancer has been covered in detail in other lectures of this series. Since much of the knowledge concerning the pathology of cAMP has been gathered from the analysis of plasma and especially urine, a survey of the data concerning the concentration of the cyclic nucleotide in these body fluids will be given first. The diseases involving the metabolism of cAMP will be classified into those in which a decreased formation of cAMP has been described, and those in which an increased production of the cyclic nucleotide has been reported.
