Possible Roles of Cyclic Nucleotides in the Regulation of Smooth Muscle Tonus

  • Chapter

Abstract

Within the last few years, our knowledge about the roles of cyclic nucleotides in some tissues has grown tremendously (17, 18). The role of cyclic nucleotides in smooth muscle, however, is still poorly understood, Smooth muscular tonus is affected by a variety of hormones and neurotransmitters that are known to affect cyclic nucleotide metabolism in mammalian tissues. In this paper we will discuss the effects of some physiological and pharmacological agents on cyclic nucleotide levels in smooth muscle and the possible importance of these changes for cellular functions.
