Abstract
Intracellular levels of cyclic AMP are generally considered to be the result of the complex interplay between formation of cyclic AMP by adenylyl cyclase and removal of cyclic, either through hydrolysis by phosphodiesterase (PDE) or extrusion from the cell by active or passive transport across the plasma membrane. In addition cyclic AMP levels may also be determined by unequal distribution throughout the cell. Of the systems involved in the regulation of intracellular cyclic AMP levels, other articles in this book deal with the regulation of adenylyl cyclases by stimulatory and inhibitory hormones and by nucleotides and nucleosides with regulation of PDE activities both in rapid and reversible manners as well as in slow and possibly protein synthesis dependent manners; and with regulation of exit rates of cyclic AMP as seen in some cell lines after virus transformation.
