Abstract
Dr. B. I. Halperin and I have also recently investigated the effect of defects on phenomena near structural phase transitions, in particular the appearance of a central peak in the dynamic structure factor. We have found it important to distinguish between defects that have symmetry such that they couple linearly to the order parameter and those that couple quadratically to the order parameter. A central peak is always produced in the former case. If further the defects of the former type have a relaxational motion at a slow rate, central peaks with finite width, as have been reported, are found. We also find that in this case the phonon frequency does not go all the way to zero (in mean field theory) as the phase transition is approached; instead, the weight in the central peak diverges as T → Tc.
