The Complexation of Calcium Ion by Diphosphonates

  • Chapter
Urolithiasis Research

Abstract

The complexation of calcium ion (Ca++) by monophosphonates (MP)* and diphosphonates (DP)* has been studied under conditions of physiological pH, temperature and ionic strength by the method of Schubert (1). In this procedure, the competition between the anionic ligand and a cation exchange resin for Ca++ is determined. Thus, with a fixed amount of Ca++, Ca45 and Dowex 50 WX4 resin 5 to 10 increments of DP were added to compete increasingly with the resin for Ca++.
