Influence of Diet on Urinary Uric Acid Excretion

  • Chapter
Urolithiasis Research

Abstract

Opinions about the effects of diet and particularly of dietary purines on urinary uric acid excretion have long been controversial. On the one hand there was the clearcut demonstration by BURIAN and SCHUR as early as 1900 that omitting purines from an individual’s diet would lower its urinary uric acid output to a minimum (“endogene Harnsäure”) and there were the experiences of two world wars with their famines. On the other hand there were claims that in clinical trials with “low purine diets” only surprisingly small decreases of plasma uric acid and urinary uric acid excretion could be found.
