Abstract
Acoustic waves, whether they are coherent (as in APR), or of a black-body type (as in magnetothermal conductivity experiments) often suffer resonant scattering by magnetic impurity ions present in the crystal under investigation. The magnitude of the scattering is measured by the ion-lattice or spin-phonon coupling constant. It is inevitable that, in such cases, the energy levels of the magnetic ion causing the scattering are often difficult to obtain as dynamic Jahn-Teller effects (J-T-E) must be included. In addition, random internal fields and strains present in the crystal can have a considerable influence on the shape, width and peak of the observed resonance.
