Abstract

The topic of this chapter has already been introduced in Chapter 2. There we used plausibility arguments to derive an elementary expression for the phonon-drag thermopower S g , and presented qualitative arguments to explain some of the dominant features of this phenomenon. We shall now carry the discussion much further, describing in greater detail both theory and experimental observation. The reader will be aware of some degree of overlap between certain portions of this chapter and of Chapter 2. We trust that the redundancy will obviate the need for excessive page turning.
