Purine Enzyme Abnormalities: A Four Year Experience

  • Chapter
Purine Metabolism in Man—II

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB))

Abstract

Specific inherited purine enzyme abnormalities are a rare occurrence. During the past 4 year period in Toronto, Canada, we have screened a population of patients for abnormalities of erythrocyte purine enzymes. Many of these patients were hyperuricemic although a substantial proportion were only assayed because their erythrocytes were used for other experimental studies. Hemolysates from certain patients were specifically referred because an enzyme abnormality was suspected. In the majority of these cases, none was usually found.
