Abstract

Pharmacogenetics, in the context of psychopharmacology, may be understood to cover the whole range of reactions to drugs as modified by genetic determinants (for a review, see Fuller 1970a). A number of reviewers (Kalow, 1962; H. Meier, 1963; Vesell, 1975) concentrate on unusual or pathological responses to drugs, and Green and Meier (1965), in a genetically sophisticated review, concentrate on physiological variables. Eleftheriou (1975a), however, in introducing “psychopharmacogenetics” as editor of a valuable set of contributions, defined it as “the area…which deals with pharmacologic agents that alter a given behavior in controlled genetic systems” (p. 1).
