Immunochemistry of Encephalitogenic Protein

Abstract

More than 40 years ago, Hurst (1932), Rivers et al. (1933), and Rivers and Schwentker (1935) were among the first to observe that repeated injections of a homogenate of brain tissue into animals could, after a time, induce a kind of disseminated encephalomyelitis in some of the injected animals. The study of this experimental disorder was greatly simplified when Kabat et al. (1946, 1947), Morgan (1946, 1947), and Freund et al. (1947) found that induction of the disease was markedly facilitated if the brain tissue was emulsified in mineral oil containing mycobacteria—i.e., Freund’s complete adjuvant or FCA—one single injection then being sufficient.
