Abstract

Body fluids contain four major classes of high molecular weight compounds, namely, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids (as micellar aggregates), and polysaccharides. These components are found as macromolecules of protein-polysaccharide, nucleic acid-protein, and lipid-polysaccharide complexes (Table 1). These complexes have several biological functions. The polysaccharides are the main components of cell membranes, cement substances, and viscous lubricating fluids, whereas the proteins make structural elements, enzymes, and components of biological defence and transport systems.
