Abstract

We recently completed a study of the ability of bursal and splenic lymphocytes to synthesize and release immunoglobulin (1). We had asked the question whether the capacity to synthesize immunoglobulin changes during differentiation. The bursae of newly hatched chicks were used as a source of immature B lymphocytes uncontaminated by plasma cells (2), and mature lymphocytes were isolated from the spleens of 3-month-old birds. Cell suspensions were fractionated by sedimentation velocity as a means to separate the lymphocytes, on the basis of size, into subpopulations (3, 4).

Supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute (CA-17049 and CA-17404) and the American Cancer Society (IM-28). J.L is the recipient of a research fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (AI-05162).
