Abstract
Comparative phylogenetic studies are a valid experimental approach to evaluate relative properties of biological and biochemical systems. Such studies serve to identify evolutionary trends and selective pressures for features which enhance species survival. Phylo-immunochemical studies, for example, have revealed both conserved features of antibodies and tolerated changes to varying degrees and/or nature (1). Comparative immunoglobulin structural analyses at the polypeptide chain level have been the subject of significant amounts of investigation (2), but such studies at the antibody active site level (especially non-mammalian) are relatively lacking in quantity and detail. To this end, we have attempted to study the relative nature of chicken and rabbit IgG anti-hapten antibodies, with emphasis on the highly sensitive fluorescyl hapten system (3, 4).
