Abstract

Lymphoid leukosis (LL) can be controlled by several methods (2, 8), one of which is by elimination of target cells for LL transformation residing in the bursa of Fabricius (8). Although the identity of the target cell within the bursa microenvironment remains unknown, removal of the bursa by surgical procedures up to 4 months of age (7) or by destruction of the lymphoid cells in the bursa by either the infectious bursal agent (9), or the lymphotoxic agent cyclophosphamide (10), or testosterone derivatives (1) prevents the development of LL tumors. However, these procedures cannot be used under field conditions because of their negative effects on liveability, productivity, and the immune response.
