Abstract

Starting in 1956 (1) R. K. Cole selected a substrain of phenotypically hypothyroid chickens from the White Leghorn Cornell C strain (CS), eventually establishing the Obese strain (OS). OS and CS flocks are maintained at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, by closed matings that purposely avoid inbreeding (2). Three additional sublines of OS, viz., OSA, OSB, and OSC, are produced by sib matings in the authors1 laboratory for the purpose of developing inbred OS lines (3).
