Immunocytochemistry of Neuropeptides and Their Receptors

  • Chapter
Peptides in Neurobiology

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Neurobiology ((CTNB))

Abstract

Peripheral cells talk to each other via hormones. The message, although diffused into the bloodstream, is picked up selectively by those groups of cells that possess specific receptors for it. Neurons also talk to each other via hormones. By virtue of the axonal networks, they are able to direct a message to receptors on specific synapses with heightened selectivity and specificity. Thus, anatomical structure in the nervous system has added a relay system to the hormonal communication system found in the periphery. Immunocytochemistry provides simple and rapid means to differentiate axons as to the neurotransmitters carried, thereby permitting distinction among dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic fibers.
