Abstract
Since macro-sociological theories of migration tend to interpret migration as interaction between societal systems, migrants do not appear there as individuals; consequently, such theories offer no possibility of differentiating migrants according to their sex (cf. Hoffmann-Nowotny 1970, Albrecht 1972). In empirical tests of those theories migrants are represented only as statistical quantities, for instance as streams of migration or as balances of migration. At the most, migrants are seen as units or members of societal systems. This applies similarly to theories on a microlevel, whether they be mathematically formulated theories of decision or theories founded on behavioural psychology. Individuals do appear in theories of this kind, but they are apt to be sexless (cf. Langenheder 1968, Kottwitz and Vanberg 1971/72). Although from the point of view of scientific theory it is welcome that theoreticians of migration (whether they work on the macrolevel or on the micro-level) strive for a high degree of generality, such theories are of little help in an attempt to scrutinize the specific problems related to migration of a certain social category, in this case women.
