Abstract

Tunable diode lasers can be tailored to emit coherent radiation over a wide portion of the infrared “fingerprint” region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This, coupled with relatively large absorption cross sections for many molecular species and high specificity have resulted in several important applications of these devices to gaseous pollutant detection. In addition to providing the fundamental spectroscopic data for a number of pollutants, diode lasers have been used for low-pressure sampling, in situ source monitoring, long-path ambient-air monitoring, and as tunable local oscillators for infrared heterodyne detection. There have been several recent developments in the capabilities of diode lasers for the detection of air pollutants, and these will be discussed.
