Abstract
The basal ganglia govern the extrapyramidal system. Unfortunately neither term is precisely defined. Here we shall include in the basal ganglia the caudate, putamen, external globus pallidus, internal globus pallidus (entopeduncular nucleus), subthalamic nucleus and substantia nigra. The caudate and putamen together will be referred to as the NCP. Certain subcortical nuclei, such as the nucleus accumbens and amygdala, which are more concerned with functioning of the limbic system, will not be discussed. The motor functioning associated with the basal ganglia seems to include the establishment of peripheral motor tone, the initiation and gross control of movement, and postural adjustments associated with balance.
