Ultrasound in the Pre-Symptomatic Diagnosis of Adult (Dominant) Polycystic Kidney Disease

  • Chapter

Abstract

Adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) is a genetic disease inherited in autosomal dominant fashion. The penetrance of the gene is such that most patients carrying it will have pathologic evidence of the disease by age eighty (1). There is no sex predilection and the etiology is unknown. The disease typically manifests itself in middle age but may appear as early as infancy. Pathologically, APKD is characterized by bilateral renal cysts. Approximately one-third of the patients with APKD also will have cysts of the liver (2) and cysts in other organs occur less commonly (3). Since patients with APKD may not manifest the disease until their 4th decade or later, the detection of pre-symptomatic APKD is of potential importance in genetic counseling.
