Summary
Some 500 patients have undergone abdominal scans with a phased array system designed for abdominal use. The device has proved to be simple in operation and the mobility of the probe as well as speeding examinations, provides the observer with a 3 dimensional concept of the tissue being scanned that is a great clinical benefit. The small contact area required allows access to zones that are difficult to scan with conventional manual scanners or with linear arrays. As yet the quality of the displayed image is not quite as good as the best contact scans, and there is a near field limitation of 1–2 cm so that superficial structures are not easily examined.
