Abstract
Attempts to measure arterial, various forms of interstitial or venous blood gas tensions by mass spectrometry have been made for ten years (1–10). Different types of probes have been used for mass spectrometry measurements of blood oxygen tension (10–14) but all of these have suffered from the problem of being non- -flexible. Key (15) attempted to develop a tube of silicone rubber sheath, nylon with polyurethane coating, and a sampling port of porous bronze plug with a silicone tip over the port. This catheter appears to be the only non-pervious one ever developed that was at all flexible, though the nylon tubing is as stiff as the small diameter mass spectrometer cannula (5).
