Abstract
Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is one of the most common cancers in women in the United States and throughout the world. Because of its frequency and accessibility to methods of early detection, cervical cancer is among the most thoroughly studied of all human malignant diseases. Its natural history has been extensively investigated, and the gradation from intraepithelial neoplastic cervical changes (dysplasia and carcinoma in situ) to invasive carcinoma has been well documented. Although such progression of the disease does not appear to be an inevitable process, ample evidence has accumulated to indicate that when invasive cancer occurs it is practically always preceded by a preinvasive phase in its development.
