Abstract

This chapter is concerned with the progress of x-ray spectroscopy of ions with inner-shell vacancies. Although this book deals mainly with the spectroscopy of atoms and ions excited in their outer shells, the editors have allotted space for two limited chapters (5 and 30) for treatment of atoms that are ionized in inner shells, since these systems have become of increasing interest in the last decade. This interest is mainly due to the production of highly ionized systems in atomic collision processes, i.e., in heavy-ion collisions and in high-temperature plasmas.
