Abstract
The contribution of the sense organs to the overall filtration ability of the nervous system was outlined in some detail in chapter 2. In chapter 3 we showed that the appearance of a behavioural response to a stimulus is dependent upon “motivational” factors, over and above stimulus reception. These modulating influences rely heavily on the filtration and gating mechanisms available to the nervous system. In this chapter we shall consider how the C.N.S. actually performs this filtration of information and gating of behaviour.
