Abstract

Diatomic molecules can be divided into homonuclear and heteronuclear molecules; examples are molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide, respectively. The simplest known diatomic molecule, the molecular hydrogen ion, also belongs in the first group. This system consists of two protons and one electron. The simplicity of this system makes it a suitable link between the theories of atoms and molecules (Fig. 3-4).
