Abstract
The number of newly diagnosed patients with malignant disease continues to rise annually. Fortunately, the prognostic outlook for these individuals is no longer universally grim. Significant progress has been made in understanding cancer biology and natural defense mechanisms and in the development of new and aggressive treatment modalities. There is evidence of an overall increase in survival time and, in a growing number of cases, the opportunity for curative therapy.
