Abstract

The discovery of antibacterial agents, such as penicillin and streptomycin, led to the expectation that among the fermentation products of molds, substances with antiviral properties would be found. The search for naturally occurring antiviral agents revealed that many compounds are able to inhibit virus replication in cultured cells in vitro. Unfortunately, almost all of these antiviral substances were found to be unsuitable for treatment of virus diseases in animals and man. Several chemically synthesized compounds were found to be effective in inhibiting virus replication in mammalian cells in vitro and a few of these are currently in use for treatment of virus infections in man.
