Abstract
The remarkable development of new chemical diuretics over the last thirty years has caused an astonishing change in the clinical treatment of an array of fluid and electrolyte disorders. Diuretics successfully block the tenacious reabsorption of sodium which takes place in a variety of generalized edema states and have played a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with essential hypertension. An enormous amount of knowledge has been gained regarding the site of action of diuretics, physiological effects, value in clincal treatment, side effects and toxicities. This discussion will review some of this information.
