The Lukes-Butler classification of Hodgkin’s disease revisited

  • Chapter
Controversies in the Management of Lymphomas

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 16))

Abstract

The continued use of the modified Lukes-Butler classification of Hodgkin’s disease (HD) since 1966 must indicate its usefulness to clinicians and pathologists. However, when one considers the number of classifications proposed for the non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas in the last 10 years, its use probably also reflects the small number of pathologists with interest and experience in lymphoreticular neoplasm at the time the classification was introduced and became established. It is perhaps of interest from the historical point of view that a paper describing the nodular sclerosis type was not accepted for presentation at a national pathology meeting in 1958 [1].
