Part of the book series: Electron Microscopy in Biology and Medicine ((EMBM,volume 1))

Abstract

The advent of the electron microscope opened new avenues in biologic research. The spectacular progress achieved in the study of ultrastructural characteristics of different cell types, made possible the investigation of the fine structural features of endocrine glands clarifying the subcellular organization of hormone-producing cells in health and disease. In studies related to the pituitary gland, electron microscopy was widely used to define the various cell types, to shed light on the multiple steps of the secretory process, to elucidate morphologic responses of the cell to various injuries, and to classify tumors of the sella region.
