A Review of Animal Brain Tumor Models that have been used for Therapeutic Studies

  • Chapter
Oncology of the Nervous System

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 12))

Abstract

Laboratory investigations of primary human brain tumors have largely depended on the use of animal models. While studies of tumors in animals often lack the precision and elegance of research on the cell biology of individual neoplastic cells, observations on the behavior of in vivo models are more readily applied to clinical problems. The proper experimental use of a well-characterized animal brain tumor model can therefore be a powerful intermediate step in the overall attack on human brain tumors.
