Evidence for a Tumor Proteinase in Blood Coagulation

  • Chapter
Hemostatic Mechanisms and Metastasis

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 22))

Abstract

There is a large amount of experimental evidence that supports the concept of an association between blood coagulation and malignant disease. Since several chapters within this volume describe detailed historical and recent evidence for this association, I will only summarize this information to provide perspective about the evidence that led investigators to look for procoagulants associated with malignant tissue. The following discussion will review tumor-derived procoagulants with emphasis on evidence for a unique tumor-derived proteolytic enzyme that initiates blood coagulation (for further evidence see Chapter 12).
