Historical Overview of Clinical Experience with Anticoagulant Therapy

  • Chapter
Hemostatic Mechanisms and Metastasis

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 22))

Abstract

Other chapters in this book delineate the considerable body of information untilizing in vitro and in vivo animal models which link the coagulation cascade to mechanisms of local growth and distant metastasis of cancer. The ultimate impact of such data, of course, depends upon its relevance to human malignancy and ultimately to therapy of human cancer. This chapter will, therefore, give an overview of the clinical observations and trials which have examined the effect of interruption of the coagulation mechanism upon the genesis and spread of human tumors. Despite a considerable number of studies, no definitive conclusions can be drawn and reasons for this will be discussed.
