Abstract

Considerable progress has been made in the basic concepts concerning the role of dietary factors in the development of certain types of human cancer (1). It has been recognized that colon cancer does not stem from intentional or even inadvertant chemical contaminants in the environment, but rather is due to lifestyles and dietary factors. It has been recognized also that the promoting effects operating in colon carcinogenesis are an important component in the overall process because whether or not overt invasive disease is seen depends to a considerable extent on promoting factors (2). Dietary factors appear to modulate carcinogenesis through elevation of agents that act as promoters of tumor development.
