Abstract

Prostaglandins (PG) are a group of naturally occurring cyclic 20-carbon fatty acids. They are synthesized by virtually all nucleated cells from fatty acids precursors, released from the phospholipid pool of the cell membrane. They are designated by groups, depending on the structure of the cyclopentane ring and are characterized as mono-,bi-,and tri-unsaturated compounds depending on the number of C-C double bonds in the aliphatic side chains. These substances have a broad spectrum of actions and are involved in the control of many physiologic phenomena, including cell growth and differentiation (1,2), immune-function (3), and interferon action (4,5).
