Abstract
My general aim in this set of four lectures is to attempt, as far as is possible, to give a unification of the different methods which have been used in the treatment of electron and positron scattering by atomic systems. I have tried to achieve this aim by employing an approach based on variational principles. Hence we shall begin these lectures with a brief survey of the variational principles and methods which have been used most frequently in the theory of scattering, namely those introduced by Schwinger, Hulthén and Kohn. Further information may be found the article by Spruch1 and the books by Demkov2 , Mott and Massey3, Moiseiwitsch4, and the recent book by Nesbet5.
