Abstract
Mutagens and carcinogens can be divided into those called “direct” because they are reactive with macromolecules without enzymatic activation, and those that require metabolic activation. In this chapter, only directly acting agents will be discussed, with one exception. Dia1kylnitrosamines must undergo only a simple enzymatic step to be reactive, and for this reason they are included in the section on N-nitroso compounds rather than in Chapters V and VI, which deal with metabolically activated agents.
