Optimization of a Free Electron Laser for Far Infrared

Abstract

The interaction distance for relativistic electrons and optical radiation in a mode-locked free-electron laser is often limited by the electron bunch length. For a far-infrared oscillator, it is indicated that the round-trip gain and thus the output coupling efficiency can be increased by the introduction of an intracavity filter composed of four metal meshes.
