Abstract

In this chapter we examine the alloying of films on metallic or semiconductor substrates by laser heating. Following a brief introduction we will show through the use of selected examples how extended solid solutions and amorphous phases can be made and point out both the thermodynamic and thermophysical limitations that constrain this new surface metallurgy. Selected examples from the ferrous, nonferrous and silicide work will be reviewed.
