Abstract

A study was made of the weldability of low carbon 25% Mn austenitic steel as a new structural material for cryogenic uses, such as in fusion power reactors and magneto-hydrodynamic power systems. The availability of high-strength, high-toughness alloys for low temperature applications would contribute to increased structural safety and economy. The cost savings attained by using less expensive manganese as austenite former would also be highly advantageous. The weld of 25 Mn
