Cellular and Molecular Aspects of the Hormonal Control of Mammary Function

  • Chapter
Book cover Lactation

Abstract

In the previous chapter, the regulation of mammary growth and lactation were discussed from the perspective of the whole organism. In the past decade exciting progress has been made toward understanding the cellular and molecular events underlying these regulatory interactions and it has become clear that lactogenic proteins, particularly prolactin, play the primary role in regulating mammary function, with the sex steroids and cortisol acting as important modulators. In this chapter, we will summarize the current status of our knowledge in this area emphasizing prolactin secretion and action and the regulatory effects of estrogens, progesterone and glucocorticoids. The effects of insulin, thyroid hormones, prostaglandins, and cyclic AMP (cAMP) will be described more briefly. Because these areas are currently the subject of intensive investigation in many laboratories, the serious reader is urged to regard this chapter only as a starting point for consideration of current information as it appears in the primary literature.
